Dr. Juhee Kim’s research focuses on improving water and soil quality. Her team investigates the occurrence, fate, and mitigation of emerging contaminants such as pharmaceuticals and personal care products (PPCPs), disinfection by-products (DBPs), per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS), and toxic metals in both natural and engineered treatment systems. Current research projects include (1) studying the occurrence of PFAS and PPCPs in water, wastewater, biosolid, and soils across Hawaii, (2) developing advanced oxidation and reduction processes to destruct recalcitrant emerging contaminants, and (3) evaluating the transformation of emerging contaminants during treatment processes.
