Discovering Terrestrial Biomes in Your Own BackyardOctober 2023

Guiding your students educational experience can sometimes be challenging, but Dr. Faith Inman, an instructor at the University of Hawai‘i at Hilo campus, responded with a unique project in her 2023 Spring Ecology Class. She challenged her students to find five distinct terrestrial biomes in their own backyard. By definition, terrestrial biomes are based on land with similar climates and vegetation, and Dr. Inman’s students were able to use the exceptional online tools to aid in their research. These easily accessible online tools included interactive maps found through the University of Hawai‘i’s Geography and Environmental department and included separate websites for rainfall (Rainfall Atlas of Hawai‘i), climate (Climate Atlas of Hawai‘i), solar radiation (Solar Radiation of Hawai‘i), and evapotranspiration (Evapotranspiration of Hawai‘i). According to Dr. Inman, “They did great!”
